Father's Day: The Classic Gift

fa·ther

[fah-ther]
noun
1. a male parent.
2. a father-in-law, stepfather, or adoptive father.
3. any male ancestor, especially the founder of a race, family, or line; progenitor.
4. a man who exercises paternal care over other persons; paternal protector or provider: a father to the poor.

He may be the origin of our X and Y chromosomes or progenitor, but he's still just Dad to many of us, or in my case "Popi".  My dad was a "suit to work" kind of guy, who had everything and wanted for nothing.  He was, and still is, the hardest person in our family to buy for.  So we set up a Father's-Day-gift-giving-tradition to buy him the same gift every year.  Sure he knew what he was getting, but that meant that he didn't have to buy this particular items for himself any more.  What was this easy gift of choice?

No surprise, ties.  That might sound as exciting as giving him an ugly Christmas sweater.  But ties don't have to look like they came off of a used car salesman.  My number one tip to picking something safe is to keep them in the blue/grey/black family in some variation of stripes or plaids.  If you want to throw in a curve ball, try lilac.  That greyish shade of pale purple looks great with black and navy suits.

For the many types of dads out there, here are some fashionable suggestions.

Burberry Exploded Check Silk Tie $165
HUGO Woven Silk Tie $95

Michael Kors Woven Silk Tie $49.50

Alfani RED Skinny Tie $21.99 (on SALE at Macy's)

From my family to yours, Happy Father's Day!

Not So SHORT Story: Dressing up for summer

Before 1- Kristina's typical summer style
Kristina was in desperate need of an update to her summer wardrobe.  She was tired of the tee-shirt-and-shorts look she had been wearing since, well, high school.  She felt like her look had no real style, and needed help putting together outfits.
Before 2- Kristina wanted to get away from just tees and shorts
We needed to do some serious shopping to get her ready for her trip to the Galapagos Islands next month.  Off to Bloomingdale's to take advantage of their end-of-season sales on summer clothes right now (additional 40-50% off the already reduced prices!!)...

Now you may look at this Aqua brand dress (below) on the website and move right on past it, probably because it doesn't seem very versatile.  Isn't silk too dressy for the day?  Sure Kristina could wear it on her vacation, but how was it going to translate into her day-to-day once she got home?  How do you make an outfit out of a dress?
Image of dress as styled on the Bloomingdale's website
First thing we did was to remove the belt that came with it (simple matching fabric sash style), and replace it with the rich brown Michael Kors woven leather belt.  The elasticized waist and flowy fabric of the dress were calling out for something with a little structure.  We balanced out the heaviness of the belt with this great military green jacket from Guess.  To pull the colors all together and finish off the look, we added dark brown sandals.
Re-styled dress Option 1
To change up the dress some more, we decided to keep the belt (it looked so great already), but soften the look by replacing the military green jacket with this great sleeveless cardigan in an oatmeal/tan color.  We replaced the brown leather sandals with some Marc by Marc Jacobs ballet flats to balance out the structure of the belt, and to bring back that military green color into the outfit.
Re-styled dress Option 2
Kristina left our shopping appointment happy and loaded down with shopping bags full of fresh ideas for her summer wardrobe.

What is your summer style?  How do you make an outfit out of a dress?

Pics from the Verrieres and Sako trunk show 10/09

The Verrieres & Sako trunk show was so much fun last night.  It was a barrage of designer duds left and right.  And for a fraction of the cost of some of the handbags being worn by the beautiful ladies, my entire outfit cost less than $700 (accessories included).

 Left- Stephanie Verrieres     Right- Me

 Left- Me      Right- Diana Todd

What I wore:
  • animal print cropped jacket I bought on sale from Guess a couple of years ago
  • pearl necklace from Banana Republic
  • black Prada dress circa late 2007 with enough stretch in it to look amazing on me :)
  • gold stretch bracelet and Michael Kors chained handbag in purple suede
  • Jeffrey Campbell shoes (the best part!!!)

Since the shoes were the most amazing part of the outfit (not sure why they didn't make it into any of the photos), here they are :)

What I bought:

Thank you to Drew Altizer Photography for being so quick to post the pics.
